White Coats for Human Rights

At times in medical school, it’s easy to get lost in the science and memorization and forget the bigger picture of why you want to be a doctor.  The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s InFocus weeks come between the major system blocks and are designed to be a break from the studying and an opportunity to think about important aspects of medicine that are not in a traditional medical school curriculum.

On November 1, 2016, the Muslim Students Association at Mount Sinai (MSA) organized the inaugural “Islamophobia Today: Our Response”—an annual conference that aims to educate attendees about the impact of Islamophobia in today’s society and the current efforts to incite inclusion. IcahnBeWell—Improving Student Wellness

As first-year medical students, in 2015 Jessica Rizzuto and Mimi Smith were selected to become co-leaders of the Student Wellness Committee—a student-run organization at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). While the groups’ commitment to every students’ well-being was reinforced through a variety of initiatives and social events created to reduce burnout, Jessica and Mimi felt that there was a significant opportunity to enhance existing resources and make well-being a key priority supported by the Department of Medical Education.
